Inspired from an old French Chanson de Geste ("Song of Deeds") as translated by William Caxton in 1485, this novella tells the story of Charlemagne's struggle with the wicked Admiral Balan of Spain. If you would like to buy a hard copy, please write. In the meantime, here are links to my most current version:
Those with an obsessive love for the "authentic" may be interested to know that Caxton was translating a 13th century text called the Speculum Historiale. The editor's notes to the EETS text indicate that he did a fairly close translation. There is only one remaining copy of Caxton's work, a folio volume with 96 leaves, is kept in the King's Library of the British Museum, Press-mark C. 10 b. 9. There are two copies of the Speculum Historiale in other museums.
