Charlemagne (32 years old) tours through Atri, discovers Roland (10 years old), and fosters him in the care of Richard of Normandy.

Charlemagne defeats the Saracen King Guithlem (Agolant?) in a winter campaign in Lombardy. Dukes Benes (42), Ronald (34) and Gerard (34) fail to show up, making the battle unduly hard.

-    November, 776. Ogier (25 years old) is knighted, and Roland (13 years old) fingers Aloys (20 years old) as a coward.

-    April, 777.  Benes slays Charlemagne's nephew Enguerrand by mistake.

-    May 18, 777. Charlemagne announces his fury at the Dukes at Pentecost court.

-    May 19, 777. Lohier (age 16) sent with an insulting message to Benes.

-    May 23, 777. The Four Sons are knighted.

-    June 20, 777. Lohier killed by Benes.

-    July 2, 777. Charlemagne learns of Lohier's death. Aimon flees for Dordonne. Lohier buried. Charlemagne summons his war.

Dukes Benes, Gerard & Ronald war with Charlemagne. Battle of Troyes.

Renaud kills the King's nephew Berthelot [age 28], with a chessboard.

The Four Sons build the castle of Montessor in the Ardennes. It happens amazingly fast, but the site was recommended as having good fey 'bones' and Maugis was there to help.

Charlemagne besieges Montessor. It falls by treachery at the very end of the year. Aimon discovers his fleeing sons and kills all but eight of their men. Bayard leaps the Meuse.

779-783

Saracens recover enough strength to invade again. This time they focus on Gascony, which is nominally independent of Charlemagne under King John. The Saracens make steady progress until Renaud arrives in 783.

The Four Sons go into hiding and banditry.

Charlot (Charlemagne's son) is born (Charlemagne is 40)

Duke/King Guerin of Vienne rebels.

-    "A Roland for an Oliver" (both 19 years old)

Saracens invade from Spain

-    Roland and Ferragus

The Four Sons move to Gascony, arriving in September. Renaud single-handedly defeats the Saracen army. King John offers him the world. Renaud picks a perfect strategic site for a castle instead.

The Four Sons build Montalban and settle down.

Saracens invade Italy big-time. Two scenes of action, Rome (under Admiral Balan and Fierabras) and Milan (under Corsuble)

Turpin (age 40) made an Archbishop

Charlemagne invades Spain. "Charlemagne and the Admiral of Spain."

The invasion of Spain progresses. Roland and Vernagu (in siege of Pamplona)

Four Sons ousted from Montalban to allow for invasion of Spain. Move to Dortmund on the Rhine
