NOTES FOR CHAPTER 3 - THE TOWER

CHAPTER 3 – THE TOWER

This chapter is mainly about Floripas. Even the famous scene where Naymon “plays at the coal” with Lucifer revolves around her in one way or another. I can just see her leaning close to Roland (!), batting her beautiful eyelashes and saying, “My feelings are so hurt by that horrible beast. Can big, strong you think of some way to make him stop?” Flutter, flutter, snicker-snack.

But she’s not all fluff and manipulation. Far from it. It’s Floripas who defeats the Enchanter, and Floripas who devises the strategy of hurling coin as a defense. That threat creates the stalemate that later allows the Paladins to be saved.[1] Similar achievements appear later on.

The other character who begins to emerge is King Brullant. Sortibrant actually believes in his gods, but Brullant’s the one we’re learning to fear. A heathen, yes, but a practical one.

[1]  For those who are interested in such things, the missing relics make an appearance in Caxton’s version of the treasure-room scene. Showing the relics is another way that Floripas strengthens the Paladins’ resolve.
